Did not attend Starfleet Academy; accepted commission from Starfleet at rank of lieutenant, junior grade. First assignment, Starfleet systems diagnostic engineer, U.S.S. Zhukov, 2362. Received commendations for excellent service, though noted for reclusive behavior. In 2366, transferred to the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D. Performance in engineering department rated unsatisfactory; reprimanded for unauthorized use of Enterprise personnel images on holodeck. Evaluation upgraded to good when instrumental in diagnosing and resolving malfunctions of ship systems caused by invidium contamination from leaking Mikulak tissue sample containers. In 2367, BarclayΓÇÿs I.Q. exponentially increased due to exposure to broad-spectrum emission of radiation from alien space probe. He saved the Argus Subspace Telescope Array from a series of critical malfunctions, and devised a prodigiously fast new warp drive modification. Acting against captainΓÇÖs orders, Barclay piloted the Enterprise 30,000 light years toward the galactic core, leading to the discovery of an alien civilization, the Cytherians. BarclayΓÇÖs intelligence returned to normal, his innovations lost. In 2369, he investigated the disappearance of the U.S.S. YosemiteΓÇÖs crew and discovered quasi-energy microbes, living in a transporter matter stream, which had infected the shipΓÇÖs transporter buffers and some of the crew. The microbes were removed, and the crew members recovered. Later that year, a computer-generated intelligence from the holodeck, Professor James Moriarty, held the ship hostage. Barclay was on the engineering team assigned to the problem of giving Moriarty physical reality. Barclay was patient zero for BarclayΓÇÖs Protomorphosis Syndrome in 2370. Treatment for a mild case of Urodelan flu, a synthetic T-cell, had mutated into an airborne pathogen that activated the introns of the crew, causing them to regress to earlier forms of their species.
In 2370, transferred to the Holoprogramming Center at Starfleet's Jupiter Station, working under Dr. Lewis Zimmerman on the engineering team that designed Starfleet's Emergency Medical Hologram program. Following Enterprise-DΓÇÖs destruction in 2371, Barclay transferred onto the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-E in 2372. Encountered the Borg during their 2373 incursion, and met Zefram Cochrane in EarthΓÇÖs past, 2063.
